Explanations

Effectively explaining new knowledge and skills to pupils is an important aspect of teaching. We need to take pupils from what they already know or can do, and introduce them to the new knowledge/skill in a way that supports their learning. Abstract concepts need to be supported by concrete examples (and non-examples), for example after an introduction to the alkene family, we could display examples of structures of alkene molecules, and also display structures that aren’t alkene molecules. This will help our pupils to understand what an alkene molecule is (and isn’t).
